a wish for my daughter

He was once a different man.
A stranger now lives in his body.
The cold, calculating stare he gives
shows no sign of the kind gaze,
the loving glances
he once gave to you and me.
His contagious laughter once
bounced off the walls, and his
slightly goofy smile
once filled me with joy.
I wish you could know that man,
this warmhearted friend.
I wish you could see him
when you close your eyes at night to sleep.

But such a person is a stranger to you,
much as he is now a stranger
to me.
